Lyrically, it’s the “come-up” story we’ve all more or less heard before but I can enjoy it if it’s presented well which I think it is in that song. He takes a more melodic approach to the track while still balancing it with the Offset flow I’ve come to enjoy. His recent guest verses as well as a good chunk of his Migos work has shown me he’s got a talent for riding beats. The main thing I like him for is his flow. These first few paragraphs probably make me sound like I really don’t like Offset but I do. Following that opener, that would’ve been quite the come-down. That leaves me to imagine a world where he released this with no guest verse. Apparently that feature came last minute too. What does is how Offset sounds half-awake just kind of stumbling through his verses until J. But that’s not what drives me to feel this way about the song. Cole fanboy for that opinion and I’ve never denied being just that. (It’s not a very long one, either) “How Did I Get Here?” was one of the most lifeless tracks until Cole showed up. Cole, and he didn’t even need a particularly great verse to do it. The only feature that completely washes Offset is J. But CeeLo’s vocals at the end of the track just steal the show. I actually think his performance on “North Star” with CeeLo is pretty great. To the point where they vastly outshine Offset on his own album. They’re great features, don’t get me wrong. Cole, CeeLo Green and the aforementioned Big Rube. Aside from the ones I already named this album also has features like J. There is one aspect that can be looked at positively or negatively depending on your thought process, though. (Although the Oscar The Grouch bar got more of a groan) Her and Offset both stay on a topic and Cardi B’s references in here verse got a chuckle out of me. I’m not a fan of hers really at all but I like the song “Clout” quite a bit. The usual suspects, to keep it all the way real with you.īut out of all those I listed, the one that really came through with a surprise was Cardi B. A majority of this album’s features are artists we already know Offset can work with. “Wild Wild West” would’ve been much better as a solo cut or with a slightly more enjoyable feature. I didn’t love all of them but the only one I entirely disliked was Gunna. I just felt the need to express how the introduction impacted my first listen.Ī big positive point about the album is it’s features.
Because there are things I really enjoy about what it is. I’m not gonna spend the whole time bagging on what the album isn’t.
(Akin to the way Childish Gambino does on “Awaken My Love!” albeit with substantially less soul) As crazy as it may seem to some, I do believe Offset has it in him to deliver such a project. It gives off an impression that we’re in for a project where Offset delivers at least somewhat thought provoking material speaking to his children. Whoever decided that the first thing we needed to hear was his brilliant spoken word section deserves a raise.īut there is a big fatal flaw that accompanies the powerful intro. I give that credit to legendary poet and Outkast affiliate Big Rube. Offset does get more introspective than he’s ever been on the verses but honestly he’s not really the one who sets up his album so well. Nothing else in their discography has ever given me this much to work with lyrically. That may sound like I’m giving it too much credit just for being mildly personal but it’s the truth. The very opening song immediately sets itself apart from anything else I’ve heard out of the Migos camp. So what makes this even remotely more special than your typical Migos project? Keep in mind that this is far from a great album.īut just the fact that this article exists means I found it more compelling than the ones before it (that even includes “Culture 2” to an extent).
After being greatly disappointed by the other two’s solo projects, I have to say I agree. Many people have said Offset is the member of the Migos with the most solo potential. After a handful of delays, Offset has finally released his first solo outing, “Father Of 4”.
